I go to 'configuration', then OCR, then to the drop-down menu, and even though I installed Readiris as you recommended, I am unable to select it, it is not there. The network scanning feature does not work when using the SCAN key or the control panel of my Brother machine.

I do beleive that the brother software package that comes with these printers has one included, go to brother web site and download full driver and software package for your machine The ocr program that comes with your machine is called ControlCenter2.

OCR with Brother MFC 5440CN
It includes manufacturer's Day Warranty One for all and all for one. It's quick and easy mfc-544c0n scan images or text to E-mail, OCR, or a file. When the waste ink box is full you get that error, you will need a shop to replace the box and reset the counter. This one is just for everyday mfd-5440cn and does the job. I called Brother support, went thru the drill and was told that this was being escalated to the next level and I would receive a call back the next day.

As a fax, the MFC transmits at an amazing 3 sec a sheet approximatelyand support both mono and colour transmissions.
