I had sound on the same machine with Feisty. The main volume was automatically un-muted. It showed up loud and clear, but when I clicked play, it played back far too quietly. Further to confuse the issue, when you copy the correct module over the old module, or simply delete the old module, the module dependencies are still referring to the old version of snd-hda-intel. Better, remove the old version of snd-hda-intel. This gl90 to confirm: It looks like I just needed to re-adjust the volume settings in Kmix they must have been re-defaulted when I upgraded to 8. Previously all I had was generic not the version but for some reason the system has decided to choose on it's own and set it to default.
