Its just background - you can format your drive and split it into partitions if you want before using it. I have had this problem.
I just replaced the power supply that came with mine with an old Toshiba laptops power supply. Maxtor Personal Storage I didn't want to go there since the case is very hard to open and I didn't want the hassle. But, there are a few on there that say they were able to get them working again. The drive was formatted with FAT32, formatting is a preparing the disk for use, and there are 3 main PC formats.
Plug the connector into the drive, then connect the internal power cable. Now the Maxtor drive should be visible in the file explorer.
